The James Beard Foundation announced its 2026 Restaurant and Chef Award winners on 15 June at the Lyric Opera of Chicago. The awards cover a wide range of work, from national categories to chefs representing individual regions of the United States.

Michael Tusk of Quince in San Francisco received Outstanding Chef, while Kalaya in Philadelphia was named Outstanding Restaurant. Lei in New York won Best New Restaurant, and Wild Crumb in Bozeman, Montana, received Outstanding Bakery. Adrian Torres of Maximo in West University Place, Texas, was recognized as Emerging Chef.

The list is interesting because there is no single winning style. It includes ambitious dining rooms, neighborhood hospitality, regional cooking, beverage programs, pastry, and baking. The common thread is a clear point of view supported by consistent technique. A memorable restaurant does not need to chase every trend when it understands its ingredients, guests, and sense of place.

That principle travels well to the home kitchen. Master one dough instead of collecting ten unfinished recipes. Learn how salt changes a soup in stages. Keep notes when a roast or cake works. Serve a simple dish at the right temperature and give it your full attention. Awards belong to professionals, but the habits behind excellent cooking are available to everyone.
